The three passes (keep the load IDENTICAL between them)

Same occupants, same fuel, same cargo, same hitch hardware on every pass. A passenger who gets out between passes just changed your tongue weight by their body weight. Position per the scale's platforms: steer axle on platform 1, drive axle on platform 2, trailer axles on platform 3.

  1. Pass 1: loaded truck alone. Trailer disconnected. Record steer, drive, and truck total.
  2. Pass 2: full combination, WDH bars UNTENSIONED (or removed), trailer jack fully raised. Tensioned bars shove load onto the steer axle and trailer axles; they hide the raw tongue weight. Record all platforms + combination total.
  3. Pass 3: full combination, WDH tensioned exactly as you tow. This is the ticket that checks your axles as they'll actually run. (Fifth-wheel/gooseneck rigs: no bars, two passes total.)

Full axle weight vs GAWR — not the increase. Your rear axle's rating cares about everything it carries, not just what hitching added. And a platform scale reads axle groups, not corners: it cannot see a side-to-side overload (Escapees' SmartWeigh program exists precisely because platform tickets "can actually give you a false 'safe' indication"). Wheel-position weighing is the gold standard when you can get it.

Worked example — including the trap

Pass 1: truck alone 7,120 lb. Pass 2: truck axles hitched (bars untensioned) 8,090 lb; combination total 15,500 lb. Raw tongue weight = 8,090 − 7,120 = 970 lb. Gross trailer weight = 15,500 − 7,120 = 8,380 lb → tongue = 970 ÷ 8,380 = 11.6%. The trap: the trailer-axle platform read 7,410 lb; divide by that and you'd get 13.1% — a phantom 1.5-point error from using the wrong denominator.

Once you have the real tongue weight, take it back to the ratings check as a measured value. It replaces the whole estimate band, and the "depends on tongue weight" verdicts resolve.

Why three passes, and what each one isolates

One ticket tells you what the whole rig weighs. It cannot tell you how that weight is distributed, and distribution is the entire question. Tongue weight is not something a scale measures directly. No platform at any truck stop reports it. What a platform reports is the load standing on the tires above it. Tongue weight has to be inferred, by weighing the same truck twice under two different conditions and subtracting. Each pass exists to hold one thing constant so that a single unknown falls out of the difference.

Pass 1 isolates the truck

Drop the trailer, drive the loaded truck across the platforms, record the steer axle, the drive axle, and the total. This is your reference. It already contains everything that will still be aboard for the next two crossings: fuel in the tank, the toolbox in the bed, the dog, the passengers, the bed cover, the hitch head bolted into the receiver. Nothing about Pass 1 is exciting, which is exactly why people skip it, and then have no baseline to subtract from.

Pass 2 isolates the coupler

Hitch up, raise the jack fully so the trailer's front end is carried by the truck rather than by a foot on the pavement, leave the spring bars off or slack, and cross again. The truck's axles now support everything they supported in Pass 1 plus exactly one new thing: whatever the coupler presses down with. Subtract, and the new thing is all that remains. That difference is the raw tongue or pin weight. NHTSA's towing publication defines tongue weight as "the amount of the trailer's weight that presses down on the trailer hitch," and Pass 2 minus Pass 1 is that pressure expressed in pounds. Record the combination total on this pass as well, every platform together; it is the second figure the derivation needs.

Pass 3 isolates nothing — it is reality

Now set the bars the way you tow, using the same chain links or the same washer count you actually run, and weigh the combination again. This pass derives nothing. It is the ticket that states what each axle group carries on the road, and it is the only one whose figures belong beside a GAWR. Fifth-wheel and gooseneck owners have no bars to tension, so for them Pass 2 and Pass 3 are the same crossing and the method collapses to two.

Hold the load identical, or the subtraction is fiction

The derivation is a subtraction between two weighings, which means it assumes every pound that is not the trailer stayed exactly where it was. Break that assumption and the error does not announce itself — it arrives inside the answer, wearing the answer's clothes.

Concretely: if a passenger climbs out to buy a coffee between Pass 1 and Pass 2, the truck got lighter by one human being, the gap between the two tickets widens by the same amount, and the tool reports a tongue weight inflated by that person's body weight. Burn a few gallons circling the lot and the distortion runs the other direction. Dump a gray tank, top up the fresh tank, shift a generator from the bed to the trailer, unbolt the bars and leave them lying in the truck bed instead of on the A-frame. Every one of those silently rewrites the result. Water is the worst offender because it is both heavy and invisible: at 8.34 pounds per gallon, a tank somebody topped off "just a little" between crossings moves the answer by more than the precision anyone was chasing.

So: the same people, aboard, on every pass. The same fuel: run the passes back to back rather than one this morning and one after a fill-up. The same water in every tank. The same gear in the same places. The same hitch hardware riding along even when it is doing nothing. If something has to change, stop and start the sequence over rather than mixing tickets from two different states of the rig. The tool will reject a pair of tickets that is arithmetically impossible, but it has no way to recognize a changed variable that still produces a plausible-looking number, and it will not warn you about one. It sees only what you type.

The arithmetic, step by step

The figures below are the illustrative placeholders this page ships with. They are nobody's rig. Replace every one of them with readings off your own tickets and ratings off your own labels.

  • Raw tongue weight = Pass 2 truck axles − Pass 1 truck alone. 8,090 − 7,120 = 970 lb. That is the load the coupler transfers onto the truck.
  • Gross trailer weight = Pass 2 combination total − Pass 1 truck alone. 15,500 − 7,120 = 8,380 lb. Whatever is on the combination ticket and is not the truck is, by definition, the trailer.
  • Tongue percentage = raw tongue weight ÷ gross trailer weight. 970 ÷ 8,380 = 11.6%.

Two identities are worth memorizing, because they let you audit a ticket before trusting it. First, the individual platform readings should reconstruct the combination total: 8,090 on the truck's platforms plus 7,410 under the trailer axles is 15,500. Second, gross trailer weight should exceed the trailer-axle platform reading by precisely the tongue weight: 7,410 + 970 = 8,380. Where those identities fail on your own ticket, the fault lies in the positioning, the transcription, or the load, not in the formula.

The tool declines to answer in two situations rather than hand you a confident wrong number. If the hitched truck axles do not weigh meaningfully more than the truck alone, it reports a ticket problem, because a coupler that appears to add nothing usually means the trailer wheels were resting on a truck platform or the load shifted between passes. If the derived gross trailer weight lands at or below the tongue weight, it reports a ticket problem too, since that arrangement would have the tongue carrying the whole trailer.

The denominator trap, on one set of numbers

This is the specific error the page exists to kill. Having gone to the trouble of obtaining a genuine tongue weight, people divide it by the figure printed under the trailer axles, because that figure is right there on the ticket and it is obviously "the trailer." It is not the trailer. It is the portion of the trailer standing on its own tires. The remainder, which is precisely the tongue weight, is standing on the truck one platform forward, counted in the truck's row.

Watch what the substitution does to the same measurement, with nothing altered but the divisor:

  • Correct: 970 ÷ 8,380 (gross trailer weight) = 11.6%
  • Trap: 970 ÷ 7,410 (trailer-axle platform) = 13.1%

A phantom 1.5 percentage points, and the mechanism is exact rather than approximate: the wrong denominator is too small by 970 lb, the tongue weight itself, subtracted out of the trailer it belongs to and never added back. The distortion also scales with the thing being measured (the heavier the tongue, the further the two answers separate), so the trap bites hardest on exactly the rigs where the number matters most.

Notice the direction, because it is the unhelpful one. The trap makes tongue percentage read higher than it truly is. A rig with a genuinely light tongue can be handed a reassuring figure, and the owner stops investigating. NHTSA's towing publication (DOT HS 809 433) is blunt about why that matters: "Too little tongue weight can cause the trailer to sway." Weigh Safe and CURT publish the same warning independently. On the illustrative figures above, both the right answer and the wrong one fall inside the percentage bands manufacturers publish (GM gives 10 to 15 percent for conventional trailers, CURT about the same, Weigh Safe 9 to 15), so here the trap costs you nothing but false confidence. Shift the starting point down a point or two and the identical phantom lifts a light tongue into a band it does not belong in. And landing inside a published band is not a finding that a rig is safe, correctly loaded, or within spec; it is one arithmetic ratio agreeing with one general recommendation, nothing more.

Reading the platforms

A truck-stop platform scale is a run of separate weighing surfaces laid end to end, and the ticket reports a weight for each platform alongside a gross. Every calculation on this page assumes one specific correspondence: steer axle on the first platform, drive axle on the second, trailer axles on the third. Get the positioning wrong (a drive axle straddling the seam between two platforms, a long-wheelbase truck and a tandem trailer that simply do not fit the layout) and the ticket comes out internally consistent and completely useless, because the weights are real but attached to the wrong labels. CAT Scale publishes its own how-to covering positioning on its scales; follow the operator's instructions for the specific scale you are standing on, and if your rig does not fit the layout, ask the attendant before paying for a ticket you cannot use. The method itself is not CAT's. It comes from CURT and Weigh Safe, with the fifth-wheel variant from etrailer.

Two structural limits of a platform ticket deserve to be internalized. It reports axle groups, not individual wheels: a tandem-axle trailer yields a single figure covering both axles, so one axle carrying appreciably more than its partner stays invisible. And it cannot see side to side at all. The Escapees SmartWeigh program exists for that reason and words it sharply: a platform ticket "can actually give you a false 'safe' indication." Wheel-position weighing, where each wheel end is measured separately, is what closes that gap, when you can reach a rally or event that offers it.

What tensioning the bars changes

A weight-distributing hitch removes no weight from your combination. Nothing does. It relocates load, applying leverage through spring bars to take back some of what the coupler dumped onto the truck's rear axle and push it forward onto the steer axle and rearward onto the trailer's own axles.

That behavior is useful on the road and ruinous to a measurement. Weigh with the bars tensioned and subtract, and the difference between your two tickets is no longer the coupler load; it is the coupler load minus whatever the bars sent back to the trailer. The raw tongue weight, the figure your hitch's tongue rating and the ratings check both want, has been concealed by the very hardware that makes the rig tow well. That is the whole reason Pass 2 is untensioned.

Pass 3 answers the complementary question. With the bars set as you tow, the steer axle typically reads heavier than it did slack and the drive axle lighter, and those are the figures that must be compared against axle ratings, because they are what the tires and suspension actually experience. Two crossings, two different questions: the untensioned one for the hitch's tongue rating, the tensioned one for the axle ratings. Neither substitutes for the other, and averaging them means nothing.

Why every rating gets its own line

The Pass 3 checks deliberately refuse to roll up into a single verdict. Federal definitions at 49 CFR 571.3 describe distinct ratings covering distinct hardware. GAWR is "the load-carrying capacity of a single axle system, as measured at the tire-ground interfaces": an axle with its bearings, springs, wheels and tires. GVWR is the manufacturer's value for the loaded weight of that single vehicle. GCWR covers the loaded weight of the combination. A weight can sit well under one of those and sail past another, so each comparison gets printed on its own row with its own margin. The glossary page quotes each definition beside the place you physically find the number.

  • Compare the whole axle weight, never the increase. Your rear axle rating does not care that hitching up only added a few hundred pounds; it cares about every pound standing on those tires, including the truck, the fuel, the occupants and the gear that were already there before the trailer showed up.
  • Trailer axles are checked against the sum. The platform hands you one figure for the trailer's whole axle group, so it is compared against the total of the axle ratings on the trailer's data plate. That comparison cannot detect an uneven split between a tandem's two axles, and it says nothing about how the load sits within the box — see the cargo capacity page for the load side of that question.
  • Combination weight is the sum of the platforms, and tongue weight is never added twice. Steer plus drive plus trailer axles accounts for every pound of the rig touching the ground. The tongue load already lives inside the truck's axle readings; adding it again as a separate term would double-count it. The same fact is why tongue load consumes truck payload instead of sitting outside it — Ford's 2026 guide states that adding tongue load together with passengers and cargo "cannot cause vehicle weights to exceed rear GAWR or GVWR," and GM's 2025 guide says the equivalent in its own wording.

Anything left blank comes back as NOT ENTERED — NOT CHECKED, never as an assumption in your favor. Where a comparison does complete, margins are rounded down to the nearest ten pounds and overages rounded up, so the displayed figure always errs against you rather than flattering the result.

What this page never looked at

A tool willing to report "no overage found in the checks completed" owes you an equally plain list of the checks it did not complete. This one never examined tire load ratings or inflation pressures, individual wheel loads, side-to-side balance, brake condition or controller adjustment, hitch installation and torque, coupler and ball sizing, chains and breakaway rigging, cargo restraint, suspension condition, the length of the grade ahead, the crosswind across it, or any weight or length limit your state, province or route imposes. It performs arithmetic on figures you typed against ratings you typed, and blanks become "not checked," never "assumed fine." PLANNING CHECK ONLY — NOT PERMISSION TO TOW. Estimates plan, scales measure

Every percentage elsewhere on this site is a planning device — a way to decide what deserves scrutiny before you own the trailer, or before you load it. A scale ticket is different in kind: it is a measurement of one particular rig, on one particular day, in one particular state of loading, and it outranks every estimate here the moment it exists. That is the hierarchy the site runs on, and it does not reverse.

Which also sets the ticket's expiry. Reweigh when the rig materially changes — a different hitch, a rearranged bed, a season's accumulation of gear that nobody remembers loading, fresh water carried for a dry site. A ticket describes the afternoon it was printed. It makes no promises about next spring, and it never made any about the road.
