Why Payload Often Limits You First

The tow rating isn't a lie — it's a real rating computed under assumptions that don't describe your loaded truck. Here's what it leaves out, and every term on the stickers, sourced.

The assumptions inside every tow rating

SAE J2807 is the industry's uniform test standard for determining gross combined weight ratings and trailer weight ratings (Toyota adopted it in 2011). Whatever the test standard, the number printed in the brochure comes with each manufacturer's own stated load assumptions. Ford's 2026 guide: the maximum loaded trailer weight "assumes... no cargo, tongue load of 10%... and driver and passenger (150 lbs. each)." GM's 2025 guide: base curb weight "plus 150 lbs. each for the driver and a front passenger." Two adults, empty bed, empty back seat.

Add a real family, a dog, a bed full of camping gear, and a weight-distributing hitch, and the truck is carrying hundreds of pounds the rating math didn't. Every one of those pounds (plus 10–15% of the trailer's weight arriving through the hitch) draws from the same account: the payload number on your door sticker. That is the mechanism behind the whole page: a trailer weight that clears the advertised tow rating can still empty the door-sticker carrying budget long before it gets anywhere near that rating. The ratings check does this math for your actual numbers.

Six ratings, six different questions

Most towing arguments are two people quoting different ratings at each other and assuming they contradict. They rarely do. Each rating constrains a different quantity, and clearing one of them says nothing whatsoever about the rest. A combination has to satisfy all of them at once, independently, and the one that runs out first is the one that governs. The third column below is the column nobody reads, and it is where badly-planned combinations come from.

Notice that no row in that table is a verdict. Each is a ceiling on one quantity. Arithmetic can tell you whether a number you typed exceeds a ceiling you typed, and that is the entire scope of what this site does. It is not safety certification, legal advice, or permission to tow.

The tow rating: most quoted, least useful for planning

The tow rating is the number on the window sticker, in the advertisement, and in every forum reply that begins "mine's rated for." It is a genuine engineering figure and it is nearly useless as a planning tool, for three reasons that compound.

First, it describes a configuration, not a vehicle. Manufacturers publish trailer weight ratings across drivetrains and equipment combinations; two trucks wearing identical badges can carry very different capacities. Quoting a rating by badge is quoting somebody else's truck.

Second, it is computed on a vehicle loaded the way the manufacturer says it was loaded for the calculation. Each guide states its own assumptions plainly. Ford's 2026 figures assume no cargo, a 10% tongue load, and a driver and passenger at 150 lbs. each; GM's 2025 guide works from base curb weight plus 150 lbs. each for the driver and a front passenger. Nobody tows like that. Every pound you add beyond those assumptions is a pound the published number never accounted for.

Third, and most importantly, it is a ceiling on one input among several. Coming in under the tow rating does not resolve payload, rear GAWR, GVWR, GCWR, or the ratings stamped on your hitch hardware. It is one gate of many, and in the ordinary family-towing case it is rarely the gate that closes first.

One account, four withdrawals

Here is the mechanism, in the order the pounds actually arrive. Your placard payload is a single account. Four things withdraw from it, and people habitually count only the first two:

  1. Occupants. Everyone in the cab, at their real weights, not the 150 lbs. each the rating math assumed.
  2. Cargo. Everything in the bed, the back seat, the toolbox, the bed cap, the firewood, the generator, the dog and the cooler.
  3. Hitch hardware. A weight-distributing hitch is not weightless. Published shipping and assembled weights for 10,000-lb-class units run around 100–110 lb (CURT's 17063 lists 102 lb shipping; an Equal-i-zer of that class is roughly 105 lb assembled). Use your own hitch's spec sheet, not those numbers, and for fifth-wheel hardware there is no general figure worth quoting at all: read the spec sheet for the exact hitch.
  4. Tongue or pin weight. The part people forget entirely. Ford states that tongue load together with passengers and cargo cannot cause vehicle weights to exceed rear GAWR or GVWR; GM says the same thing, naming RGAWR, GVWR and the maximum trailer tongue load. The trailer does not hold up its own tongue; your truck does, and it does so out of payload.

The fourth withdrawal is what makes payload run out first, because it scales with the trailer. Choose a heavier trailer to get more capability and the tongue load grows with it: on the published conventional band, 10–15% of loaded trailer weight lands on the truck, and 15–25% for a fifth-wheel. The trailer you picked to solve the problem enlarges it.

The arithmetic, using this site's worked example. Placard 1,614 lb. Family and gear 780 lb. Weight-distributing hitch 100 lb. Trailer taken at its 7,600-lb GVWR, the honest max-load basis. Tongue load across the published 10–15% band is 760–1,140 lb. Total drawn: 1,640 lb at the bottom of the band, 2,020 lb at the top — against 1,614 lb available. That is over by roughly 30 to 410 lb across the whole range, with nothing exotic loaded and no rating disputed. Meanwhile the advertised tow rating on a truck like that might read 11,000 lb and the trailer weighs 7,600. The tow rating was never the binding number. (Internal math is exact; displayed overages round up.)

The glossary — where each number lives and what we do with it

GVWR — Gross Vehicle Weight Rating
Source: 49 CFR 571.3 — "the value specified by the manufacturer as the loaded weight of a single vehicle." Plain English: the most the whole vehicle (truck OR trailer — each has its own) may weigh, loaded. Find it: the certification label in the driver's door jamb; the trailer's data plate. We use it: HD-truck payload fallback; trailer max-load scenario; scale-page totals check.
GAWR — Gross Axle Weight Rating (front/rear)

GCWR — Gross Combined Weight Rating

Source: FMVSS No. 110 requires the placard — "The combined weight of occupants and cargo should never exceed XXX kilograms or XXX pounds" — on vehicles of 10,000 lb GVWR or less; heavier trucks (FMVSS 120 territory) may not have one, which is why our tool offers the GVWR-minus-scale-weight fallback. Plain English: your carrying budget: people + cargo + hitch gear + the trailer's tongue weight, all from one number.

The rule that matters: Ford — tongue load "and weight of passengers and cargo cannot cause vehicle weights to exceed rear GAWR or GVWR"; GM says the same naming RGAWR. Typical share: authorities publish ranges — 10–15% conventional (GM, CURT; Weigh Safe 9–15%), 15–25% fifth-wheel (GM) — and your actual number is whatever the scale says.

A brochure figure and a door-jamb label are not the same kind of claim

These two things look alike (both are printed by the manufacturer, both carry a number in pounds), but they are different species of statement, and confusing them is the most common way people end up planning against a figure that was never about their vehicle.

The towing guide is a publication describing what a configuration is rated to do. It is organized by drivetrain and equipment, it is revised model year to model year, and it necessarily generalizes. The certification label in your door jamb is attached to the vehicle in front of you and states the values the manufacturer specified for it: GVWR, and the GAWR for each axle. The yellow placard beside it states the occupants-and-cargo figure for that vehicle as it left the factory with the equipment it was built with.

That difference sets the ordering this site uses everywhere and never departs from: the labels on your vehicle outrank the owner's manual, which outranks the manufacturer's towing guide, which outranks the regulation defining the terms, which outranks component labels, which outrank anything secondary. If your door jamb and a brochure disagree, the brochure loses. If a forum post and your door jamb disagree, that is not a disagreement.

One consequence catches people out constantly. The placard figure was printed before anything was added to the vehicle. A bed cover, a topper, running boards, a toolbox, heavier tires, a bumper, an aftermarket bumper-mounted rack. Every one of those comes out of the placard number rather than being added alongside it. Nothing on the label updates itself when you bolt something on. If the truck has been modified, the only figure that describes it is one from a scale.

A uniform test standard is not a promise about a loaded truck

SAE J2807 is the uniform test standard the industry uses to determine gross combined weight ratings and trailer weight ratings; Toyota adopted it in 2011. Its value is comparability: a shared test method is what allows one manufacturer's published rating to be read against another's at all.

Comparable is not the same as applicable. A test standard establishes what a representative vehicle demonstrated under defined conditions with a defined load. It does not, and cannot, describe your truck on the day you load it, with your family, your gear, your hitch, your trailer, your tires at whatever pressure they happen to be at, on your grade, in your crosswind. The rating is an input to your planning, not a conclusion about your rig. Nothing on this page or anywhere on this site can tell you a combination is within spec or permitted to tow; the only thing arithmetic produces is whether a number you entered exceeded a rating you entered.

Too little tongue weight is its own hazard

The instinct after discovering a payload problem is to shove trailer cargo rearward and lighten the tongue. NHTSA's towing guidance is blunt about where that leads: "Too little tongue weight can cause the trailer to sway." Weigh Safe and CURT publish the same warning. Sway isn't a comfort issue: it's the precursor to losing the combination. The honest fixes for a payload shortfall are less total weight, a different trailer, or a different truck — never a dangerously light tongue.

Where your own numbers actually live

Nothing on this page is a substitute for the six places that hold the figures describing your equipment. All of them are free, and between them they take about fifteen minutes to read:

  • The certification label in the driver's door jamb. GVWR, and GAWR for the front and rear axles individually. This is the highest authority you own.
  • The yellow occupants-and-cargo placard, usually beside it, on vehicles of 10,000 lb GVWR or less. Above that threshold a truck sits under a different labeling regime and may carry no placard at all, which is why the ratings check offers a fallback rather than pretending every truck has one.
  • The owner's manual and the manufacturer's towing guide for that model year, for GCWR and the trailer weight rating for your configuration. GCWR in particular is often on no sticker anywhere.
  • The trailer's data plate or VIN label, for its GVWR and its own axle ratings — and, on an RV, the yellow cargo-capacity label with the water-as-cargo caution printed on it.
  • The labels on the hitch hardware itself: receiver, ball mount and ball each carry their own gross trailer weight and tongue weight ratings, and a rating you exceed is exceeded no matter what the other components are rated for.
  • A certified scale. The only place that reports what is actually there rather than what should be.

When any of those is missing, the honest entry on this site is blank, and a blank becomes "not checked," never "assumed fine."

Why estimates plan and scales measure

An estimate is built from published figures and reasonable arithmetic. It is genuinely useful: it tells you which trailers are worth looking at, whether a purchase is plausible before you drive to the lot, and which ratings are going to be tight. What it cannot do is observe. It does not know about the toolbox, the second battery, the firewood, the case of water behind the seat, or how the load sits from side to side.

A weight from a certified scale reports the vehicle that exists. That is why the ratings check labels its bases openly and treats them differently: a placard figure, a GVWR-minus-loaded-scale-weight figure for a heavy truck, and a GVWR-minus-curb-weight figure are not interchangeable, and the last of those is flagged as an estimate wherever it appears. A measured tongue weight collapses the 10–15% band to a single number, which is why a scale can convert a "depends on actual tongue weight" result into an answer. It converts only for the load you weighed, though. A tongue weight measured with the trailer half loaded says nothing about the same trailer at its GVWR, so the tool refuses to let a measured figure certify a hypothetical maximum-load scenario.

Scales have limits of their own, and pretending otherwise is its own error. A platform ticket reads axle groups, not individual wheels, so it cannot see a side-to-side imbalance. The Escapees SmartWeigh program exists precisely because a platform reading can give false reassurance about lateral loading; wheel-position weighing is the better instrument where you can get it. Weight-distributing bars under tension move load around, so a raw tongue weight needs an untensioned pass and axle compliance needs a pass in travel configuration. And gross trailer weight comes from subtracting the truck-alone total from the combination total, never from reading the trailer-axle platform alone. That denominator error is the single most common way a tongue percentage comes out wrong. The scale page walks all three passes.

The order of operations that actually works

  1. Read your door sticker and hitch labels — five minutes, free.
  2. Run the ratings check with real numbers and the honest weight basis.
  3. If anything says "depends" — or before any purchase — weigh the combination.
  4. Re-run the check with measured values. Estimates plan; scales measure.

The authorities are your labels, your manual, the hitch's own ratings, a scale, and the law where you drive.
